Paranormal Activity

There used to be a time, when horror movies were part of Halloween Theme. Today, every month a horror movie is released. Even television channels premiere a new horror show – whether a reality show such as Ghost Hunters or a drama series linked to a Haunted House. I am sure researchers in MIT have designed research for their PhD students to study the impact of all the glamor assigned to the horror genre. If not then they should plan for it. After all, the result of exposure from the horror media must affect the programming of our neural membranes. With these thoughts, I slid under the sheets on an unexpected cold night of May.

A noise woke me up at the middle of the night. It was few minutes after One AM on my digital clock. Then, I realized that my clock was set for Eastern Standard Time. This radio controlled enhanced digital clock was purchased few years back from a company that was now bankrupt. I had not reset my clock after the last power outage. Hence, the clock always automatically synchronized itself to Eastern Standard Time. I calculated that it was twelve o'clock. Doubtful about my own calculation ability amid sleepiness, I forgot about the noise and returned to number nine cloud.

Another noise woke me up. This time it was Three AM in New York, and Two AM in my time zone. The temperature was low. I noted that I had turned my thermostat in heating mode. Has the heating stopped working? Even though, I had the superior model from Carrier, the electronic complexities of its advanced circuit had troubled me in the past once. I heard the white noise of fan running from the vents. I remained motionless trying to catch the noise again. For some reason, the thought of Haunted House crept inside my brain. My house was old. It also had been through estate sale in the past. May be, there were ghosts lingering in the attic. The chilling temperature and my decision to remain idle increased my phobia. I covered my face with sheets, and attempted to go to sleep.

But, sleep was lost in neverland. I needed some distraction. The paranormal flying through my room kept horrifying my brain. I said to myself – start thinking about good things. How about I am eating ice cream? The taste of vanilla cone crossed my mind. The taste of strawberry cup hovered in my brainwaves. Soon, the coldness from ice cream pushed the idea of haunted house back in my mind. I started getting shivers, when some type of noise in my attic, increased my heart beats. I decided it was time to call the higher power. I knew he had heard me in the past. I started reciting a prayer. Not sure, when sleep finally took over me.

Next morning, I woke up fearless. I dismissed the idea of haunted house, amidst the bright sunny day. It is interesting how fast the day passes when you need it to stay longer. Finally, the day turned to the night. I finished watching a repeat episode of Ghost Hunters. The darkness outside returned with the haunted house idea. I decided to record any paranormal activity in my room. So, I dusted off my old handy cam. It was bulky. It still needed recording tape. Amazingly, how fast has the technology changed. Only few years back these were best of the line video recorders. Today, every thing is so sleek and touchy. May be the biggest looser idea had caught up with gadgets. Then I realized that this camera had built in night vision recording. No wonder, I spent thousand bucks on it during its reign. I assembled the camera in my room. I configured the recording to start at midnight. My visual recording was all set. However, I had observed that Ghost Hunters were also recording sound. So, I gathered my phone. It had built in digital recorder with time scheduler. I touched through few screens, and it was ready to digitally record the voices.

The night began. Again, a noise woke me up. It was as if a ghost had spoken near my ears. I looked around the camera was recording. Whether my suspicions were true, I knew that would be cleared tomorrow. So, I slid to apnea with some comfort. Couple hours later, again I woke up to a noise. My camera had stopped recording. The scenes from Ghost hunters were paralleling in my mind. I felt my feet going numb. Then as if someone were trying to elevate me up from the bed. The tingling of numbness was on my chest. I was cold. I felt I was going to choke. I opened my eyes. It was a dream within a dream. I looked at my camera. It was still recording. With a relief, I returned to sleep.

Next day, I dumped the idea of paranormal activity. The bright sunshine lit up all the dark corners of my mind. I gathered my camera and phone, to review what I recorded. When I turned the camera on, it was running an old recording of mine. What happened to last night? So, I rewind the tape. Again, my old road trip was running on the screen. I tinkered with the camera only to realize that it did not record anything. In fact, all along it was playing my tape. I had lost the knowledge of how to use it, thanks to iTouch.

Now I returned to my phone, it had stopped recording after one AM when its inbuilt memory ran out of disk space. I played the recording. It started with a silent buzz of air from the heating system. Then I heard a static. Could this be the proof? I downloaded the entire file on my computer. Then I purchased a special deluxe edition sound editing software. The software claimed that it was being used by Recording industry in Nashville. Satisfied with the authenticity, I started the software. It offered to perform various types of noise analysis. I selected the most optimal one. The sound editing software showed five minutes left to complete the analysis. Then suddenly the time jumped to ninety minutes. Could this be it? May be that static noise was the communication recorded between the Paranormal in my house. I wondered would they be planning to kick me out of the house, or were they bored by my presence.

A beep from the computer alerted me. The analysis was complete. The sound editing software presented a blue button to play the sound in normal mode. A red button to play the sound in enhanced mode. I decided to go with red. It presented me a warning that the software did not take responsibility of the sounds detected by the enhanced processing. I confirmed my approval. The playback began.

It started with hiss, then more hiss, and then the sound of my heating system turning on. It returned back with hiss, then noise of me turning over, some hiss, again me turning over, and some hiss. I felt disappointed. It was half way, and nothing useful was discovered. I immediately filed for money back guarantee from the sound editing software company. Meanwhile, the play back continued with some more white noise. Then, suddenly a loud noise echoed. It was so loud that the colorful graph on the screen spiked outside its boundary. Finally, I had the noise that had been waking me up. So, I reset the playback to few seconds before. I played it again. The noise appeared. It was my own loud snore...
